Jodhpur, it’s the blue city. I must admit that of my entire trip, it is the place that I recommend the least. Maybe because of my experience or because of the expectations I had with the blue city. But ultimately Jodhpur did not seduce me. I found a messy, dirty, dusty city. In fact, all cities in India, but each of them knew how to conquer me, Jodhpur I must say no.

We visited the Clock Tower, which you can find walking around the city. And hire a Tuk Tuk to take us to the Fortress of Mehrangarth, because I had read that having a beer from there at sunset is priceless.

Well, first of all the nice driver of the Tuk Tuk not to go around and climb up, left us at the foot of the mountain of the fortress, where a road with a steep slope began. When we reached the top they were closing and you could not enter the fort, so goodbye to the beer.

PÚSHKAR a town that falls in love

The locality of Pushkar is located northwest of Ajmer and is one of the five dhams (sacred places of pilgrimage for devout Hinduists). A Pushkar is also known as Tirtha Rash (‘the king of the places of pilgrimage’) and is a place frequented by foreign tourists.

Pushkar is one of the oldest cities in India. Seated on the shores of the lake of Pushkar.

It welcomes infinity of temples. Most are not very old since many were destroyed during the conquests of the territory by the Muslims.

I have not been in a more spiritual place than Pushkar. It does not matter if you do meditation or not, whether you are spiritual or not, just walk around the lake and you will feel what I mean.

This little village is a jewel, quiet, beautiful, with shops, restaurants, massages…

What can I say about Pushkar more than pure love!

It is small and does not have as much as cities, but it is just and essential to feel at home.

From here you can make excursions to the temples that are on top of the mountains that surround it.

It is one of the places I recommend!

JAIPUR a city of contrasts

Jaipur, also known as The Pink City, is the capital of the state of Rajasthan in India. It has an area of 484.6 km2 and a population of 3.073 million (2011).

The city was built in pink stucco to imitate the sandstone. The pink city, they call the old town built by Jai Singh II. All the historic buildings are painted a pink salmon colour that in Rayastán is the colour of luck.

The city is symmetrical, with a very rational geometric layout. It is surrounded by a crenelated wall that has ten gates. It is divided into nine quadrants of those nine quadrants. Two are dedicated to the palatial complex with the Chandra Mahal or Palace of the Moon, inside the City Palace; the Hawa Mahal or Palace of the Winds and the Jantar Mantar or observatory of Jai Singh; the other seven are occupied by the people.

The best way to get to know the cities, wherever they may be, is to walk, walk between streets, alleys and avenues. And Jaipur has a lot to see, especially if you like jewellery. HAWA MAHAL

The lake fills up during the rains and the palace is only accessible by boat. Currently the lake is polluted and the palace uninhabited, without maintenance and cannot be visited. It’s highly recommended to get out of the bustle of the city.

FORT AMBER

Another place I liked a lot was Fort Amber. The Tuk Tuk themselves take you there.

Amber Fort is a palatial complex located in Amber, 11 km from Jaipur. The building that is currently known as Amber Fort was initially a palatial complex within the original Amber fort that is now known as Jaigarh Fort.

Today, you can climb the fort from the base of the hill. During the walk, you can admire the beautiful views of Jaipur, Lake Maotha and the original city wall. Archaeological excavations have shown that the palace-fortress is built on the ruins of a temple in the sun of the year 955.

It is an incredible place to really get an idea of how people lived at that time. They’re imprisoned in their palaces for fear of betrayal. Here you have the opportunity to climb walking or elephant. I urge you; leave the animals alone, if there is no demand, there will be no offer.

AGRA, only for you Taj Mahal

Agra is a city located on the banks of the Yamuna River. It is one of the most populated cities in the State of Uttar Pradesh, with 1,586 million (2011). It has an area of 87 km2.

To get to Agra from Delhi, it is as simple as taking a train and in a few hours you are there. As I intended to visit the Taj Mahal, I decided to take a day trip. And I assure you that was enough. It is best to hire a Tuk Tuk when getting off the train, so that you can make a route through different tourist spots in the city. The monument is an important tourist destination of India. In 1983, it was recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site . And also in 2007 was designated one of The New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

An old popular tradition is that an identical mausoleum should be replaced on the banks of the Yamuna River, replacing white marble with black. Legend suggests that Shah Jahan was dethroned by his son Aurangzeb before the black version could be built.

It was recently discovered that in reality what was built in front of the Taj Mahal on the other side of the river was a garden that maintained the symmetry so dear to Shah Jahan. This complex of gardens had an octagonal pool, which reflected the image of the Taj Mahal. When seeing it in the reflection, a black Taj Mahal was appreciated.

FORT OF AGRA

Another place we visited was Agra Fort.The fort of Agra, also called Lal Qila, strong Agra Red or simply as strong Red, although not to be confused with the Red Fort of Delhi. It is located on the west bank of the Yamuna River, 2.5 km northwest of the Taj Mahal. The fort, built in red sandstone (to which it owes its name), by the Mughal emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573, can be described much more accurately as a walled palace, which encloses an impressive collection of palaces and stately buildings with architectural styles that vary from complexity to simplicity. And surrounded by a deep moat that was filled with water from the Yamuna River. You access this impressive complex through the “Amar Singh gate”, finding once inside, on the right, the “Jahangiri Mahal”.

Since 1983, it has been considered a World Heritage Site by Unesco. This is the most important fortress in India. The great emperors of the Mughal Empire lived and governed from here. It contained the state treasury.

There are many monuments, palaces … to visit. In my humble experience and my tastes, I stopped entering these places. Since the magnificence that was observed from the outside vanished when entering the rooms which were textually peeled….

What I liked the most was the visit to a workshop where they stamped the golden floral ornaments so frequent in the sharis. It was like entering a room of golden dust.

If you hire a tuk tuk that takes you, do not worry about where to eat, that’s what he also takes commission. In my case I had an extraordinary luck, because the place where we took us turned out to be the best of the excursion after the Taj Mahal!

DELHI, the two indies

Delhi, is the territory of the capital of India, is a huge metropolitan area located in the north of the country. The part of old Delhi is a neighbourhood dating from the seventeenth century where the imposing Red Fort, symbol of India. Its surface is 1,484 km2 and the official language is Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. It has a population of 18.98 million (2012).

It has a semi-arid subtropical climate, with large temperature variations between summer and winter. The summers are long and very hard. It extends from the beginning of April to October. During this period the rainy season occurs. The extreme temperatures registered in the city can reach -2º C in winter and up to 47º C in summer.

The city of Delhi has bus service, both municipal and private. It has one of the best bus systems in the entire country. The traffic in the vehicles is quite conflictive, and that Delhi is the city with the highest number of vehicles per inhabitant in all of India.

Delhi was designed to have great rail connectivity. There are numerous stations, which communicate the main points of the city and the suburbs.

The city has the Inter Airport. Indira Gandhi, for international flights. And for domestic flights it has the Delhi National Airport.

New Delhi is a fascinating city, effervescent, bustling and full of contrasts. Just by walking through the city you will find a sea of things that catch your attention. From temples, palaces and monuments to street food stalls, the barber in a corner of the street, the shoemaker in a corner of the intersection, the dentist on a rag on the sidewalk and a cow crossing the street causing traffic jam…

It’s a very big city, so according to what neighbourhood you’re in, the environment changes dramatically.

You must travel through Old Delhi to feel where the city is coming from, take a rickshaw and walk its streets. Visit the Redfort. Intermingle with the markets with their people.

Another neighbourhood from which you can get perfectly walking from Old Delhi is Paharganj, backpacker area par excellence, where more than having one of the train stations around the corner, how many with a wide range of hotels, Guesthouse, restaurants, stores, markets…

In Connaught Place, commercial and financial centre, you will find a more cosmopolitan area, where you can buy in brand stores, eat in luxury restaurants … in short, the new face that emerges in India.

To travel to India is to transport yourself to another world, from the moment you leave the airport and head to the city your eyes will not want to blink to not lose detail. Country that leaves no one indifferent, hated by some and loved by others. I will tell you based on my experience after traveling the Inda for a month. And I assure you that I am one of those who love India!

If it is true that India was my first trip alone and backpack on my back, but being the first I decided, because of the fear of the new and not experienced before, to be part of a Facebook group of people traveling to India during that year. That way we could contact each other so we could meet in India and share part of the trip. This is a good option for those who want to travel but not having with whom.

Anyway, I encourage you to travel even without company. During the trip, when traveling alone, we know so many people with whom to share, whether it be four words or four days en route.

To travel to India you need a visa. For this you can hire whoever manages it or you can order it directly, either personally in their offices or online. I managed it particularly online. The first thing was to look for flight, it is clear that there are infinite possibilities where to get a flight, each has its own strategies to get the cheapest flights. I usually look for Skyscaner, and compare with the websites of the companies.

ROUTE

Once I have my flight in hand, I began to plan the route to follow. What cities or towns I wanted to visit for that you have wide information online.

HOTELS

In India they are all cousins of all and everyone has a hotel wherever you are or where you go. Everyone will offer you the thousand and one …

As I told you, I used to see places where I wanted to go. It’s sometimes as easy as asking to see the room before, enough to fall in good port.

Keep in mind that in India you will find rooms of all prices, from € 3 to the most luxury. For my first night, I booked a room at a hotel with airport pick-up for € 30, ah! And breakfast included. Evidently that was more a hotel than all the other lodgings I was in. Now, yes, the stains on the sheets and the dirty environment ruled every part of the establishment. And that does not mean that they do not clean! With this I mean that for a hotel of 20-30 € per night I prefer the Guesthouse for my experience because of much cheaper prices and more familiar treatment.

Here I must say that I never book a hotel in advance, as I came to the place I was looking for a place to sleep. Keep in mind the times when you arrive at the sites. It is not the same to arrive at 12 o’clock at noon than at 3 o’clock in the morning. Yes, you arrive at the time you arrive there is a group waiting to offer accommodation, taxi … if you arrive at high hours is the only option to find a place. You can also try and go knocking on doors; nobody opened it to us…

Many of the Guesthouses close the doors with padlocks. It’s good to bring your own padlock from here (and safer).

TRANSPORT

The plane is most practical, fast and expensive…. Especially if the distances are very long, there is no other way but to fly. And believe me; in India the distances can be very long.

But transportation in India has nothing to do with what is known in other countries. Traveling by train in India is like a new journey in which you are already doing.

It is clear that there are also trains with premium tickets, but if what you really want is to know India, do not forget to take one of its local trains in which the journey lasts 4 times more.

What you should take into account are the routes to be taken and the time it takes to be sure that you arrive on time. Here distances can end up being eternal. However, the whole country has a good rail network that connects towns and cities, take more or less to arrive.

This is something to keep in mind, since many tours can be done during the night and thus save money in accommodation.

What you should take a look at is where the stations are in each city to be able to go there and book your ticket. Another option is to buy it through the many agencies that are there and you shouldn’t to go to the station. But it’s more expensive than if you go buy it yourself.

I bought there a kind of magazine with all the trains and routes throughout India. It’s fantastic! Because, there are routes that are not done in reverse.

Another option is to travel by bus, this is an adventure! The roads in India are not the best of the country. The holes found along the road are noticed by the bus and all its passengers. Especially if the trip is at night and you are stretched out sleeping, I assure you that your head will make a close friendship with the roof!

GUIDE

I believe it is imperative for any trip in which more than one city is visited to take your guide, whether purchased or made by yourself, with information of all kinds relevant to your trip.

I have travelled with and without a guide, and evidently without information you are more lost.

LUGGAGE

The luggage you use will always depend on the type of trip you take. I personally recommend going backpack on the shoulders in India. India is not a place where you can wear your best clothes, or high-heeled shoes.

With 4-5 shirts, a pair of pants, 2 pieces of long sleeves and some sneakers you have more than enough (without forgetting the underwear). At the Guesthouse you can usually wash your clothes or ask to be washed for a small fee.

What are good to bring is a little kit, what you need, something for vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration and above all a good mosquito repellent. In a matter of personal hygiene, you can easily buy there.

It does not hurt to bring a mosquito net (although I do not use it throughout the trip).

If you travel by train and the journey is by night or long, do not take the cheapest ticket.

Lloret de Mar, in the south of the Costa Brava, is one of the most attractive and tourist towns of our coast. Its most important natural heritage are the many beaches and coves that surround it.

Just 1km from the urban center of Lloret we find Fenals, an urbanization with its own identity that has a wide range of apartments and hotels in front of the Costa Brava, away from the bustle of the nightlife of Lloret de Mar.

The Fenals Beach is very familiar, we are talking about the second largest beach in Lloret, behind the one known as Lloret Beach, located further north and which can be reached by the way round. Crossing a series of hidden coves in the well-known Punta de Fenals and Punta d’En Sureda, where the Sant Joan Castle is located, from the 11th century, it leads to the main beach of Lloret, about 30 minutes on foot.

Fenals is a beach that, by its nature, is usually quite busy in summer. The beach enjoys an exceptional atmosphere. The maritime promenade that surrounds it gives it a unique animation., The southern part of the cove is surrounded by a beautiful natural environment and leads to the cove d’En Serrahima and, a little further to Cala Boadella, just below the Gardens of Santa Clotilde.

La Cala de Sa Boadella located in a privileged enclave, accessible through a pine forest, has a natural charm.

Quiet, protected by an extensive grove and surrounded by cliffs, Sa Boadella still retains characteristic features of a virgin cove just 1 kilometer from the busiest beaches of Lloret de Mar and under one of the most beautiful and leafy gardens of the Costa Brava : the Garden of Santa Clotilde.

The Cala de Sa Boadella is about 200 meters long and about 25 meters wide.

It is practically the only virgin beach of Lloret de Mar. It is a long and narrow beach in which the granitic rocks that compose it draw a marked division, forming small coves at the same time. Only the furthest from the entrance are nudists.

Its crystal clear waters, its golden sand and the tranquility of an unexploited corner make this beach an ideal place to enjoy your visit on the Costa Brava. But the idyllic and romantic atmosphere that emerges this special cove on the Costa Brava is also due in large part to the environment that surrounds it. The cove is surrounded by a leafy white pine forest of curved formations, very curious, with trunk heading towards the sea.

The seabed is shallow in the first meters from the shore and full of rocks, caves and natural caves as we enter the sea. It is an ideal place to spend the day with family practicing water activities such as snorkeling or kayaking.

And, of course, any visitor to Cala Boadella will have to realize that, right above the cove, there is the Renaissance garden of Santa Clotilde, designed in Italian style in 1919 by Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí (designer also of the Palace Gardens) of Pedralbes, in Barcelona). The garden can be seen from the outside, although it is highly recommended to consult the visiting hours to be lost inside.
