Delhi, is the territory of the capital of India, is a huge metropolitan area located in the north of the country. The part of old Delhi is a neighbourhood dating from the seventeenth century where the imposing Red Fort, symbol of India. Its surface is 1,484 km2 and the official language is Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. It has a population of 18.98 million (2012).
It has a semi-arid subtropical climate, with large temperature variations between summer and winter. The summers are long and very hard. It extends from the beginning of April to October. During this period the rainy season occurs. The extreme temperatures registered in the city can reach -2º C in winter and up to 47º C in summer.
The city of Delhi has bus service, both municipal and private. It has one of the best bus systems in the entire country. The traffic in the vehicles is quite conflictive, and that Delhi is the city with the highest number of vehicles per inhabitant in all of India.
Delhi was designed to have great rail connectivity. There are numerous stations, which communicate the main points of the city and the suburbs.
The city has the Inter Airport. Indira Gandhi, for international flights. And for domestic flights it has the Delhi National Airport.
New Delhi is a fascinating city, effervescent, bustling and full of contrasts. Just by walking through the city you will find a sea of things that catch your attention. From temples, palaces and monuments to street food stalls, the barber in a corner of the street, the shoemaker in a corner of the intersection, the dentist on a rag on the sidewalk and a cow crossing the street causing traffic jam…
It’s a very big city, so according to what neighbourhood you’re in, the environment changes dramatically.
You must travel through Old Delhi to feel where the city is coming from, take a rickshaw and walk its streets. Visit the Redfort. Intermingle with the markets with their people.
Another neighbourhood from which you can get perfectly walking from Old Delhi is Paharganj, backpacker area par excellence, where more than having one of the train stations around the corner, how many with a wide range of hotels, Guesthouse, restaurants, stores, markets…
In Connaught Place, commercial and financial centre, you will find a more cosmopolitan area, where you can buy in brand stores, eat in luxury restaurants … in short, the new face that emerges in India.
